Sustainable Jewellery
Sustainable jewellery refers to working in a way that minimises its environmental impact. It takes many things into consideration, including the materials used, the production process, the labour conditions, and the overall social and environmental responsibility.
Some key things to consider when buying sustainable jewellery:
Why Should I Buy Jewellery That Is Made From Recycled Metal?
Buying pieces that have been repurposed from old jewellery will helps to reduce the demand for virgin material, which can be harmful to the environment. Consider using stones or metal from vintage jewellery to create something new.
Wherever possible I will recycle gold and silver from other projects and use this to make a new piece of wearable art. If I am unable to do this myself, I will use reputable suppliers with traceable sources.
Why Should I Buy Jewellery That Is Ethically Sourced?
Sustainable jewellery prioritises using ethically sourced materials, such as recycled metals, fair-trade gemstones, and conflict-free diamonds. This ensures that the sourcing practices do not contribute to human rights abuses, environmental degradation, or armed conflicts.
All metal I buy is from reputable suppliers that are committed to sourcing their materials ethically. They are committed to transparency which enables provenance.
How Do I Know If Jewellery Is Being Made Sustainably?
The simple answer to this is reputation. Small businesses rely on positive word of mouth and recommendations, and in the world of social media, transparency is everything. It is very easy to write a negative review for the world to see, so building a trusting and open relationship with clients is imperative.
I make process videos, which you can watch . If you are looking to commission me for a piece of jewellery and would like a video of me making it, you can add it to your order here I can provide 5 photos at no additional charge. If you would like more information on how I work sustainably, please get in touch.
What Is Responsible Manufacturing?
Sustainable jewellery brands and suppliers will strive to minimise their carbon footprint and reduce waste throughout the manufacturing process. This can involve using energy-efficient machinery, implementing recycling programs, and adopting environmentally friendly practices
I will minimise any unnecessary waste, and where necessary, follow guidelines to make sure all waste is disposed of correctly.
My suppliers are committed to ethical sourcing and sustainability, and have policies in place to regulate this. Their code of practice covers ethical business practices, which include protecting human rights, responsible sourcing of materials and follow industry auditing practices.
What Is Fair Labour?
Sustainable jewellery manufacturers emphasise fair labour practices, ensuring safe working conditions and fair wages for the artisans and workers involved in the production process. They may also support small-scale mining communities, to promote their economy and well-being.
I am a one-woman business and am responsible for myself! I adhere to safe working practices and check that my suppliers are fair to their suppliers.
What About Transparency In How Jewellery Is Made?
Sustainable jewellery suppliers should provide transparency about their supply chains, disclosing information about the origin of materials and the production processes. Brands may also obtain third-party certifications, such as Fairtrade® or FSC® certifications, to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
I am committed to being transparent about all practices in my work. I do not directly deal with mining of materials but rely on my suppliers to get correct certification and provide transparency.
How Long Will My Sustainable Jewellery Last?
Sustainable jewellery is designed to be timeless and durable, encouraging longevity and reducing the need for frequent replacements. Repair and recycling services may also be offered to extend the lifespan of the jewellery and minimise waste.
I hand-craft jewellery to ensure it will last a lifetime and it brings me joy to think that something I have made will be passed down through generations. However, if you want a piece of jewellery I have previously made for you re-making into a new piece, I can discuss all options with you.
If you are looking for a way to add a touch of luxury to your life with minimal impact on the environment, sustainable jewellery is a great option. It can simply be more beautiful, especially when you know that it has been made with care and attention to details. It may not always be the most budget friendly option, but by choosing a piece of sustainably hand-made jewellery, you can contribute to a better future, and own a unique piece of wearable art.
